Sewing FAQs

What is the fabric's GRAINLINE?
What do I need to do differently when sewing with knits (versus woven)?
Do I need a serger to sew your patterns?
The grainline of a fabric generally is parallel to the selvage edge.  The grainline runs perpendicular to the stretch.
What is a fabric's STRETCH?
Generally the fabric stretch goes across the fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge.  Sometimes fabric has 4 way stretch, but the fabric will still generally have more stretch from selvage to selvage.
What is a fabric's BIAS?
The bias of the fabric has the most stretch. The bias runs at a 45 degree angle along the threads in the fabric. When making bias tape, you will have to cut the bias tape strips at a 45 degree angle in the fabric.
What do I need to do differently when sewing with knits (versus woven)?
Knits require different tools, stitches, and techniques than woven fabrics.  For more information on sewing with knits, please refer to our sewing guide page here:
Do I need a serger to sew your patterns?
You can easily use a sewing machine to sew up any of our patterns.  If you do not have a serger, we suggest using a 3 part zig zag or an overcast stitch to finish and reinforce your raw edges.  For piecing the sections of the garment together we suggest using a stretch stitch on your sewing machine.

Pattern FAQs

What is "v1" or "v2"?
V1, v2, v3, etc refers to the version of the pattern (version 2 is v2, version 3 is v3, etc). We sometimes update our pattern files and when we do, we list the file as a new version. Sometimes the updates are small edits, while other times the new version can have a whole new option for the pattern. It's always best to work with the newest version of the pattern. Any updates to patterns will be announced in our Facebook group. The new versions of the files will automatically update in your account, but you will need to re download the new file. Your download count will automatically reset back to 10 on any updated files.
What is an "A0" file?

An A0 pattern file is formatted for printing on a larger paper size (approximately 841 x 1189 mm or 33.1 x 46.8 in). Printing A0 files requires specially sized paper and printers. A0 is commonly referred to as a "copy shop" file, since these files generally have to be printed at copy shops. Since A0 pattern files are printed on larger pages, there is usually little to no assembling of pages (as you would need to do for the standard paper size pattern file).
Where are the band (waistband, wrist cuffs, neckband, etc) pieces or cut charts for my pattern?
On a few patterns we draft band pattern pieces, but for most patterns we list the band sizes in a "band cut chart" located directly on your pattern piece. Since the bands are rectangular pieces they are easily cut with a rotary cutter and grid over a cutting mat, using the measurements provided. The band cut charts should be used as a guide, and depending on your fabric and personal measurements, you may have to adjust the band size to get a better fit for your garment.

Where can I get more help with sewing or assembling my pattern?
We have a Facebook group where we can answer any of your questions and help you through anything from downloading to sewing your garment. We also often team up with other Facebook groups to host sew-a-longs for our patterns. These sew-a-longs offer extra help in the form of videos, alteration advice, charts and info graphics with more detailed information, as well as hosts who are happy to answer any of your sewing questions. Any sew-a-long event is posted in our main group, and we can also direct you to past sew-a-longs (which will almost always still have the photos, videos, and guides still posted). You can join our Facebook group here: Hallå Patterns Group
Which files are included within a "Complete Set"?
The complete set includes the regular print size pattern and the tutorial.  The complete set does not include the A0 print size, which is listed as a separate file in your download list.
Can I save paper by printing only specific pages of the pattern?
Yes. You can print just the pages containing the options you want instead of printing all the pages of the pattern. Use the print guide at the top of the first page of the pattern to help you figure out which pages contain each pattern piece. Also you can view the instructions on a tablet or mobile device, instead of printing them.

Tech FAQs

How to print at 100% scale?

Please check if your printer setting is set to something other than 100% scale. Sometimes this occurs when the computer attempts to print something larger than what would fit on a A4 or letter size sheet of paper. To remedy this, please select the “Actual Size”, “Custom Scale 100%”, or “Scale 100%” at the print confirmation dialog window. This will ensure that your pattern is printed at its intended 1:1 ratio scale. (Note: this instruction applies whether you’re using Windows, Mac, or any other operating system. Please see attached screenshots.)

How do I download my pattern?

To troubleshoot the issue, when you contact us for assistance please provide some information about your process: 1. What type of device are you using? (e.g., phone, desktop) 2. What type of web browser are you using? (e.g., Edge, Chrome, Safari) 3. How far along the process can you reach before the download problem? In the meantime, please try the following: 1. Restart your computer 2. Make sure you’re logged into your Hallå account BEFORE attempting to download 3. Use one of the approved web browsers to download (e.g., Edge, Chrome, Safari) This restart process seems effective for nearly everyone that has described a similar issue.

What is a ZIP file?

Each pattern set is available in PDF and ZIP formats. PDF is the standard document format that you’ll want to download. These are simply the individual files that you’ll need to assemble the pattern. They usually include the Pattern, the Instructions, and sometimes a Pattern in A0 paper size format. ZIP files are simply the collection of ALL of the pattern files--compressed into one file. Some customers prefer to download this single file—which they will then extract (aka “unzip”) from their computers. It’s simply a matter of preference and convenience. I hope this helps! Take care and let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm having difficulty downloading the pattern files. Can you send me the files via email?

Due to the large file size of our pattern files and the file size limitations of virtually all email services, we're simply unable to send files by email. We therefore recommend following the troubleshooting tips in this FAQ to download the files directly from our web shop.

How do I print the pattern from my iPhone/iPad?

To print from an iPhone/iPad or other iOS device, you'll need one of two things: 1. AirPrint Printer. These are printers that allow wireless printing direclty from teh device.

Any coupon code is entered immediately after you press the “continue to payment method” at the checkout process. You’ll see (at the top), the “discount” entry box where the code should be entered. Due to the digital nature of our products, refunds are offered only under very limited circumstances (i.e., a pattern that was accidentally purchased twice). As such, we cannot offer refunds on pattern files that were purchased and subsequently downloaded.

Where can I find the codes for the free patterns?

Do I have to pay for updates to my purchased patterns?

Whenever a pattern is updated the files are automatically updated in all accounts that have purchased the pattern.  All you need to do to receive the updated version of the pattern is log into your account and download the new file version.  New files are listed as V2, V3, V4, etc.  Your file count will reset back to 10 when there is a file update.
